Witnesses claim that Officer Gerald Broussard was spending his day off shopping for groceries at the Giant on Crain Highway yesterday afternoon when he noticed a black man reaching through the cracked window of a 2001 Ford Taurus, the make and model of Broussard’s own vehicle, in the parking lot. Broussard approached the black man from behind and told him to freeze, which caused the man to turn around quickly. Broussard reportedly then reached for his concealed sidearm and pointed it at the black man, shouting at him to “get on the ground” before unloading three 9-millimeter rounds into the man’s chest just two seconds later. The black man, later identified as Ernie Myers of St. Charles, was pronounced dead at the scene. Myers was 34.
